On the SB 458. The legislators received over 15,000 calls and 1,500 emails opposing the bill. So they changed the wording of the bill. It used to say 'Shall accept' and now it says 'May accept' which gives school districts more wiggle room in accepting students or not. Henry county had also gotten involved as they border Clayton county also, and their schools meet or exceed the requirements. This bill is a bandage for the county, it doesn't solve anything and in fact it brings neighboring counties down. I think what we will see is an influx of renters moving into town to get their kids in accredited schools. I don't have an issue with this, as long as the landlords or property managers are careful in who they rent to, if you wonder what I mean refer back to my new neighbors, 11 in a 3bedroom house, the front living room is being used as a bedroom!

GA Senate bill 458

There is a senate bill that is causing a storm in my county. GA Senate Bill 458. It's a bill that probably would have made little noise for my county if it wasn't for the Clayton county debacle. The county is about to lose it's accreditation. This bill is a big deal because it states the students have a choice of a scholarship to a private school, or entrance into another school that meets or exceeds standards. So what happens if the whole county loses accreditation? 50,000 students go searching for new schools. Many of those students will try to enter Fayette schools. Now, I feel sorry for those students, it's really the fault of the county residents for voting in the school board. But we as involved parents have seen what goes on in schools. There are the privileged children with their money and drug use, the gangsters, and the ill prepared, and ignored children. What type of students will be coming into the schools? There is no choice if you live in district, you just take them in. But these children are not in district they are coming in because there is space, and they need to go to school per truancy laws. Where does the money come from to pay for their education? Half of the cost per child is from the state, the rest from local taxes. My taxes will be stretched thin to cover my child and Clayton county children. Where are their taxes going? Will it go to my schools, pay for my infrastructure? The roads will need more maintenance from the influx of Clayton drivers dropping off their children in the schools. More police will be needed to cover traffic. The teachers will need more resources, and who will pay for that? Where will the teachers from Clayton county go? Sit around in empty classrooms collecting a pay check? Or will they have to apply to Fayette schools? The reason why the schools are losing accreditation is because of mis rule from the board, and abuses from the school administration. I have written to state legislators and called the governor's office too. I really hope this bill does not pass. It's not going to be pretty in the next few months. Clayton board has until September 1st to make changes, then they lose their accreditation, which means right now, Clayton parents are trying to get their kids transferred before school starts in August.
